If you have ever thought that 3D Glasses made you look nerdy then the VR Joy
2000 is right up your alley with its flicker filter they could almost pass for a
pair of Oakley's. Though great looks isn't all this package has to
offer it is an added plus. The VRJoy 2000 is the only package that I tested that
not only shipped with Stereo Creation software but free games as well.
This review will cover only information specific to this particular glasses
package. Putting the same information in each 3d glasses review would be
redundant so for your convenience I have also posted several articles to help
you learn more about 3D glasses and how to use them. If you are new to 3D
Glasses I recommend you read our article "3D
Glasses How they Work" so you have a better understanding of the
technology behind 3D shutter glasses. There is also a list of articles at
the end of the review that will help you get the most out of your 3D Glasses.
In the Box
Included are the glasses which as I stated before resemble a space
age pair of Oakley glasses with their removable glare guard in place. The
glasses fit quite well but are a little on the small side and fit a bit tight
snug. The cable on the glasses measures 5'6" which while the
shortest of all the glasses I tested is more than adequate due to the fact that
the controller conveniently sits on your desk. The VGA pass-through cable has a
connector that goes between your VGA card and Monitor cable and is about 2"
long with a 5'5" cord to lead up to the controller on your desk. The
controller is approximately 2.5" x 3" and 1" tall and has two
glasses connectors on the front, connectors on the back for power and VGA
Pass-through, and on the top three buttons for Power, mode and stereo reverse.
The controller draws its power from the keyboard connector on your PC and
has a pass through that your keyboard plugs into and then a cable that runs up
to the controller just like the VGA pass-through that measures 5'10" in length.
Also included is an instruction manual and the driver CD that contains VRCaddyME
as well as S.I.C. (Stereoscopic Image Converter) software package.

Usage
The controller for the VRJoy 2000 is very nicely planned out as to
not cause a lot of extra mess behind your PC while making the glasses
connections and controls handy. Because the controller sits on your desk
the glasses connections are right there in reach making no need for an extension
cable for the glasses and its also very handy if you like me like to unplug your
glasses and put them up when not in use. The VGA pass-through, power cable, and
controller are probably the highest quality parts of all the packages I tested.
The glasses are quite comfortable however the glare shield which
is basically a snap on sun glasses shield made everything way to dark and I
wasn't able to get the gamma high enough to feel comfortable using it. Without
the glare shield the glasses worked comparable to any other I have tested though
they did feel a bit tight at first. As with a few of the other packages I tested
I was concerned with the cable thickness to the glasses as it is quite thin.
The glasses don't seem to support the Under-Over mode of the
eyeSCREAM drivers which wouldn't be a problem in most cases seeing as it doesn't
ship with them. However the lack of compatibility with the eyeSCREAM drivers is
limiting in the long run. With the upcoming eyeSCREAM Pro just around the
corner which will add stereo support to both OpenGL, Glide, and Direct3D this
will more than likely be out of the question. This is especially important to
voodoo owners as the eyeSCREAM drivers is the best choice for max compatibility
as the VRCaddyME has some issues with the Voodoo based boards and page flipping.
The bundle options include one game for $69.95 or three games
for $79.95 however there are only three choices which are Hexen II, Driver, and
System Shock 2. While all three titles are a bit dated Driver and System Shock 2
were very strong titles that both work very nicely with the 3D Glasses. The down
side is that those hardcore gamers that play everything that comes along will
not have anything to gain in this bundle.
Conclusion
The VT Joy 2000 package is well built and works well with the
included drivers however the lack of compatibility with the eyeSCREAM drivers
does knock it down the ladder a notch or two However with the steady
improvements of the VRCaddyME driver this shortcoming may be mute, especially
with the full resolution driver comes out. With the 3 game bundle you get the
glasses package and 3 games for slightly less than you would pay for the three
classics separately making this a really good value minded package.
